GEMA | Music is valuable to us

GEMA brings together many creative individuals. They compose music or write lyrics; Sometimes both are present. Then there are those who publish music. Without these people, our world would be even poorer. If it weren't for GEMA, they might have been even poorer. As a powerful creative community, they can exercise their right to fair compensation when their works are publicly used. Imagine: we are currently in the mid-19th century. You are a composer of chansons, sitting in a caf é in Paris. Suddenly playing music that you are very familiar with - no wonder, because it comes from you! Emotions are high, guests are excited, and the landlord's cash register rings. With you? Just pay for your lemonade. You may also say, 'Wait a minute...' They gather once a year to attend the shareholders' meeting. There, members discuss and decide on current issues. Meanwhile, they reached a consensus on what the future of GEMA should look like. Very important: The shareholders' meeting decides on the so-called distribution plan. This plan specifies how royalties are accurately allocated to music authors and publishers. Last but not least, the General Meeting of Members elects the GEMA Supervisory Board. Approximately 4450 ordinary GEMA members (i.e. members with voting rights) attended the shareholders' meeting. There are also 64 representatives. These, in turn, are determined by approximately 81500 extraordinary and affiliated GEMA members, who defend their interests.
